Are you looking to give back to your local community and support the NHS? East Midlands Freewheelers (EMFW) offers an incredible opportunity to use your skills for a vital cause. This completely volunteer-run charity relies on dedicated people to deliver life-saving supplies across the region, entirely free of charge. Could your next call, ride, or drive save a life?
East Midlands Freewheelers (also known as Blood Bikes) is a registered charity that provides an essential service to NHS hospitals, GP surgeries, Milk Banks, and donors. From urgently needed blood and medical supplies to the delivery of Human Breast Milk, EMFW volunteers are the backbone of this operation.
You don’t need to be a seasoned motorcyclist to get involved—the organisation needs dedicated individuals in a variety of roles. If you can give up just a few hours a month, you can help make a massive difference.
Essential Roles That Save Lives: It’s Not Just About the Bikes
EMFW has three core volunteer positions, meaning there’s a perfect fit whether you’re happiest on the road, working from home, or engaging with the public.
On the Road: Volunteer Riders & Drivers
These volunteers are the public face of the charity, using liveried vehicles to conduct time-critical collections and deliveries.
The Mission: You will transport vital medical supplies, blood, and Human Breast Milk between Donors, Milk Banks, GP Surgeries, and Hospitals.
The Requirement: While EMFW needs passionate people, you may need to have (or be willing to obtain) an enhanced riding or driving qualification to take on delivery runs. However, there are plenty of ways to get involved, even while you train up! These liveried vehicles are also an important part of fundraising events, so getting out and about is essential.
Behind the Scenes: The Controller Role
Controllers are the crucial link in the delivery chain. This vital role is typically carried out from the comfort of your own home.
The Mission: You act as a liaison, taking calls from Milk Banks, Hospitals, and Surgeries and passing the details on to the appropriate Rider or Driver.
The Requirement: You will be responsible for tracking the riders, ensuring they safely reach their destination and make it back. Crucially, all the necessary training and ongoing support is provided by EMFW to ensure you are confident in this pivotal role.
Raising Awareness: Become a Volunteer Fundraiser
The charity’s life-saving work is only possible through generous donations. Fundraisers are essential for keeping the wheels turning.
The Mission: You will attend events alongside other volunteers to raise the crucial funds needed for operations and increase awareness about who East Midlands Freewheelers are and the incredible work they fulfil.
The Requirement: You should be a people person with a smart appearance, ready to adopt the EMFW uniform and engage with the public. Rest assured, there is always plenty of support on fundraising days—along with a biscuit or two!
